election results - (5 replies)

i'm doing a report on elections in various countries. How much did Fidel get in the last election? Was it Fidel or the Communist party. Has this percentage changed much over 40 years of revolution?

1. book

I can recommend a good book about the 97/98 elections, "Democracy in Cuba and the 1997-8 Elections" by Arnold August. It has a good explanation of the election system in Cuba.
I can tell you that 98.35% of those who can vote did vote in 1998, that is over 16's and 94.45% voted for an eligable candidate ie didnt spoil their ballot paper which they had been encouraged to do by people outside the ocuntry..The number of spolit papers was down compared to the last electionin 1993.Hope that helps a bit.
Also you do not vote for a political party you vote for a candidate, no party lists in Cuba, a candidate has to get more than 50% of the vote to win.You dont have to be in the communist party to enter the elections.

Plus: WE do not vote for Castro, but for a local leader (delegate) and those ppl vote for higher level of delegates and so and so up to the top. For some misterious reason same ppl is always at the top even when the bottom ppl change a lot.
