Vegetarian - (10 replies)
Could I survive in Cuba if I am a vegetarian? I want to go
for like a month or two but I was wondering if I can do it as a
vegetarian. |

2. Food
Beans(red or black), rice, yucca(fried and boiled), and
fried plantains(green and ripe) are staples in the Cuban diet.
Congris(rice/bean mixture) usually contains pork fat for seasoning.
Unfortunately, due to the lack/cost of cooking oil, at home most Cubans prepare fried dishes with pork lard, which will probably seen you into deep shock. You frequently find salads of green beans, cucumber, or cabbage with a dressing of lime juice/oil or vinegar/oil. |

3. Food
Food in Cuba leaves a lot to be desired in terms of
variety. As a non-fish eating vegetarian it will be very difficult. With
fish, a little easier. If you are vegan, I think it would almost be
impossible. You can eat alot of white rice and black beans. You can get
pastas (usually of poor quality with poor quality cheese or tomato sauce,
like, say, Chef Boyardee). You will find basic salads of lettuce and
tomato, bananas, oranges and pineapples. There are alot of fried potatoes
and bananas, but I don't know if fried in animal fat or
vegetable. |

4. yes
Yes you will survive in Cuba being a vegetarian. However,
Cubans are big meat eaters, pork mostly. Try the fish if you like. Lots of
beans, veggies, rice, potatoes, and fruit. Its true what poster above said
that they do cook a lot of the food with pork lard, so watch out for that.

5. Religious freedom in Cuba
Yes, there is religious freedom in Cuba. Were you expecting a prohibition on vegetarianism? May I personally award you dumb comment of the day? |

7. What the fu%*
If this board were about any OTHER country besides Cuba,
would you be asking this silly question? Did you expect to be forced to
eat meat? What you put in your mouth is your business. Did you think that
perhaps there are no fruit/vegetables in Cuba? Or maybe you thought there
are no vegetarians in Cuba? Maybe YOU can "introduce" vegetarianism to the
poor backward spiritualy deprived Cubans. Maybe they'll give you a
medal. |

Since when do rice and bread contain zero-protein? Rice is
the protein source in the Asian diet. You sound like a reformed
meat-head. |

10. protein
One thing that I enjoy every morning in Cuba is a fresh
fruit plate with banana, papaya, orange, sometimes pineapple, and mango.
It's great. It might not have enough protein for Protein-Boy above, but I enjoy it. |
